Philip Roths beryktede romanhelt Alexander Portnoy skal tilbringe julekvelden hos en av sine mange og kortvarige svigerfamilier. Og jødiske Alex blir rystet av kristenjulen: «Not only is there a tree conspicuously ablaze in every parlor, but the houses themselves are outlined with colored bulbs advertising Christianity […] The Idiocy of the Jews all year long, and then the idiocy of the goyim on these holidays!» Men som alltid finnes det håp, nærmere bestemt kristne jenter i sine uimotståelige høytidsklær: «But the shikses, ah, the shikses are something else again!» God jul!
